Do I need a DNO application for an EV charger?

Short answer: most commercial or multiple-charger EV installs need a full DNO application (the G99 process), not just a notification. A single small domestic charger can often be connected under a G98 notification (fit-and-inform). The dividing line is how much load you are adding and whether the network can accept it without assessment.

G98 notification vs G99 application

G98 covers smaller connections that can be notified to the DNO after (or shortly before) install. G99 is a full application the DNO must assess and approve before connection. Commercial EV charging — several units, rapid/DC chargers, workplace, retail, depot or fleet sites — usually crosses into G99 because of the total demand added at one supply.

Signs your job needs a full DNO application

What a DNO application actually involves

The DNO needs a consistent evidence set: site and supply details, the proposed equipment and load, a capacity position, and the right forms for your region. Missing or inconsistent evidence is the most common reason commercial EV applications get returned. A pre-check maps the likely route and lists exactly what is missing before you submit — see our commercial EV charger DNO application service.

Is a DNO application the same as a G99 application?

For most commercial EV charger connections, yes — the DNO application follows the G99 process (with G100 export/limitation where relevant). Smaller single installs may only need a G98 notification.

Can my installer do the DNO application?

Yes. Your authorised installer or qualified engineer is responsible for reviewing and submitting. PermitGrid prepares and evidence-checks the pack so the submission is complete; we do not submit or certify design on your behalf.

What if I get it wrong?

Incomplete or incorrect DNO applications are the most common reason commercial EV jobs stall — the DNO returns them for more evidence. A pre-check identifies the likely route and the missing evidence before you submit.

Not sure which route your job needs?

Send us one stuck job. We identify the likely DNO and route and flag the missing evidence — no account, no payment to check.
